Seniors Pairs Betterball Stableford Competition Result

Played on Thu 29th Oct 2026

Seniors Pairs Betterball Stableford

Forty-six players, some sparkling teamwork, and a countback that needed a lie down afterwards.

A magnificent turnout of 46 Seniors took part in the latest Pairs Betterball Stableford, on 29/10/2026 producing some excellent scoring and an incredibly tight finish at the top of the leaderboard.

With partners relying on each other to contribute when needed, there was the usual mixture of heroic recoveries, timely pars, and the occasional heartfelt "Don't worry, I've got this one" after a wayward tee shot. As it turned out, every point mattered.

🏆 Hunt & Nixon Triumph in Thriller

The winning partnership of Andy Hunt and Wayne Nixon posted an impressive 43 points, securing first place on countback thanks to a superb back nine score of 24.

In a competition where teamwork is everything, the pair clearly complemented each other perfectly, producing a score that proved just enough to keep the chasing pack at bay.

Their victory earned them £18 each and the satisfaction of seeing their names at the top of the results sheet.

🥈 Gilbert & Gilbert Push Them All the Way

Finishing just behind were Mike Gilbert and Tony Gilbert, who also returned 43 points but had to settle for second place after a back nine score of 20.

Matching the winners' total score shows just how closely contested the event was, and on another day those few points on the inward half could easily have swung the result the other way.

They each received £16.

🥉 Grewcock & Pretty Take Third

Third place went to Richard Grewcock and Graham Pretty, whose excellent score of 40 points secured the final podium position.

A solid performance throughout the round earned them £14 each and kept them comfortably clear of the pack chasing behind.

🏅 Countback Decides the Remaining Places

The battle for the remaining prizes proved equally competitive.

Alasdair Carruthers and Dave Andrews finished fourth on 39 points, their stronger finish securing the position with a back nine of 20 and a back six of 15. They each collected £12.

Just behind them were Andy Lowe and Mark Beresford, also on 39 points. A back nine of 20 kept them in contention, but a back six of 14 meant they narrowly missed out on fourth place. They received £10 each.

Completing the prize list were Bill Lobley and Matt Lavelle, who also finished on 39 points. Their back nine of 19 earned them sixth place and £8 each.

💷 Prize Fund Summary

The competition attracted an excellent field of 46 players.

  • Entry fees collected: £161
  • Prize fund paid out: £156
  • Retained for Seniors Funds: £5

The Treasurer was delighted to discover that the sums balanced nicely, which is often more challenging than some of the putting on display.

📌 Closing Notes

The Pairs Betterball format once again proved a popular success, with excellent support from the Seniors Section and some remarkably close scoring throughout the field.

Congratulations to Andy Hunt and Wayne Hixon on a well-deserved victory, and commiserations to Mike Gilbert and Tony Gilbert, who were only denied the top spot by a particularly strong inward half from the winners.

With two pairs tied on 43 points and three pairs tied on 39 points, the countback system certainly earned its keep. Fortunately, unlike some golfers, it never argues with the result.

Another successful Seniors competition, played in good spirit and with plenty of evidence that having a reliable partner can be almost as useful as finding the fairway. 🏌️‍♂️🏌️‍♂️🏆
